Tree, soil, mesh, chopstick, container and scissors, all laid out and ready on the table.
Scrape back the top layer of soil until the surface roots (nebari) come into view.
Pick the best viewing angle, based on trunk line, foliage position and root arrangement.
Secure the mesh pieces at the bottom with a little soil, so the pot can drain properly.
Gently tease the soil away from the root ball, using the chopstick on larger clumps.
Cut back any excess or overly long roots extending beyond the root ball.
Place it in the pot to match the front and trunk angle you identified earlier.
Fill in around the root ball with the soil mix provided.
Press the soil gently into place. No air pockets, but leave room for oxygen to reach the roots.
Keep the soil just below the rim of the pot, with the nebari roots visible.
Water until it drips out the bottom of the pot, making sure it is fully saturated.
Move the tree to a warm, semi-shaded spot, sheltered from wind and harsh sun.
